Understanding God and the Trinity

Critics Will Ask: Where Is the Word “Trinity” in the Bible?

The word Trinity isn’t in Scripture.
This theological term describes the full picture we see in the Bible
—God Himself revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

For nearly two thousand years, Christians have held this truth, tracing back to the apostles.
The doctrine of the Trinity continues to shape the heart of Christian faith today,
defining who God really is.

God’s Oneness and the Promise of the Redeemer

Passages like Isaiah 44:6 show God’s unique oneness
“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.
“

  • The Lord, the King of Israel-(YHWH) is the eternal God, the one who reigns over all
  • In the Old Testament, this title refers to God the Father as Israel’s ruler
  • He also speaks of Himself as Israel’s Redeemer, pointing forward to the Son
  • Unity of God: I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God

Revelation 22:13 reads:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”

Here Jesus declares His eternal nature, echoing Isaiah 44:6

  • shows that the Redeemer is fully God and fulfilled in Christ.
  • showing that the God who reigns in the Old Testament is fully revealed in the Son

God with Us: The Son Becomes Flesh

John 1:1, 14: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh.”

  • Jesus (the Word) is fully God, yet distinct from the Father.

Matthew 1:23 says:
“Behold, a virgin shall bear a son, and His name shall be Emmanuel

The Hebrew meaning of Emmanuel is —God with us.
God Himself steps out of heaven, takes on human flesh, and dwells among His people
to rescue and redeem them.
The second person of the Trinity, the Son, became one of us.

Jesus Receives Worship and Holds All Authority

In Matthew 28:17-18, the disciples worship Jesus, and He declares:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”

Yet in the wilderness, after being tempted by Satan, Jesus had said:
“Worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve”
Jesus is quoting Deuteronomy 6:13, affirming that worship belongs to God alone.
Jesus’ acceptance of worship and His claim to all authority
He is fully God—the Son of the Trinity, sovereign over everything

Jesus Forgives Sins—Claiming God’s Authority

In Mark 2:5-7, Jesus tells a paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven.”
The scribes reacted, “Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
By forgiving sins, Jesus reveals Himself as God in the flesh.

The Angel of the Lord Is the Son

In Exodus 3:2-6,
Moses meets the Angel of the Lord in the burning bush and worships Him.
When scripture says- the angel of the Lord, it means Jesus
Angels never accept worship; God alone does (Revelation 19:10; 22:8-9)

In John 8, Jesus points back to the burning bush where God revealed Himself as “I AM.”
John 8:58 – Jesus says, “Before Abraham was,I AM.”
He uses the divine name “I AM” (YHWH) that God used with Moses (Exodus 3:14).
By claiming this, He identifies Himself as the eternal God,
not just a human prophet.

The Jewish leaders understood what He meant
—they picked up stones to kill Him
—because Jesus was claiming to be the eternal God who spoke to Moses at the bush,
The Almighty Himself.

John 1:18 says:
“No one has ever seen God; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
”

What you see over and over in the Old Testament is people do in fact see God
….is the bible contradicting itself?
Not at all. As long as you understand the doctrine of the trinity
In the Old Testament: when people appear to see God
The Angel of the Lord, not to be confused with “an angel of the Lord”
They are seeing the Son not the Father Himself.
Distinct from Yahweh-yet called Yahweh

👉 depending on translation-The Old Testament uses the phrase “Angel of the Lord” roughly 56–65 times
👉 God’s glory is so pure and powerful that, in our fallen condition, human eyes cannot fully behold His holy essence.”

Why does the trinity matter?

Because there are many religions and groups claiming to know God.
The Trinity is what sets Christianity apart
—it shows that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one in essence.

Two groups might both say, “We worship God,”
but if they are worshiping a completely different God, there is no real unity.
The doctrine of the trinity keeps us united in worshiping the same God.

  • “Trinity” not in Bible, but the truth is revealed: God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
  • Historic Christian belief: Traced back to the apostles; shapes faith today.
  • Only God is God (Isaiah 44:6) yet Redeemer promised points forward to the coming son
  • Jesus as fully God and fully man: John 1:1,14 – Word became flesh, Emmanuel (“God with us”)
  • Jesus forgives sins: only God can do-(Mark 2:5-7)
  • Jesus uses the divine name “I AM” (YHWH) that God used with Moses (Exodus 3:14).
  • Worship belongs to God alone, so Jesus‘ acceptance confirms His deity (Deuteronomy 6:13)
  • Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only so Jesus’ acceptance confirms His deity (Matthew 4:10)

The Megiddo Mosaic
The earliest archaeological evidence of Jesus being called God
is on display for the first time ever in Washington, DC
at the Museum of the Bible until Dec 2026
